Mayor LaToya Cantrell, City and State officials, as well as neighborhood leaders celebrated completion of the S. Galvez Street Infrastructure Improvement Project with a ribbon cutting ceremony this month.
The $5.4M project between Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Toledano Street was constructed by Command Construction Industries, LLC and completed earlier this month.
The new pervious parking lanes and wider neutral grounds hold the equivalent of 1500 bath tubs worth of water. This project will detain storm water to prevent the City’s pumping system from being overwhelmed during a rain event.
The S. Galvez Street Project will also enhance the public area and trigger subsequent recovery and investment in surrounding neighborhoods. The project was designed in accordance with the City of New Orleans’ Complete Streets policy.
Landscaping will be monitored until all the grass takes root.
The scope of work for this project included full reconstruction of the roadway:
- Replacing the existing sewer, water and drainage lines;
- Widening the neutral ground;
- Narrowing the roadway from 35 ft. to 26 ft.; and
- Reconfiguring the roadway from two travel lanes and one parking lane to one travel lane, one dedicated bicycle lane and one parking lane.
