Central City residents that typically use S. Galvez St. to access the CBD from the Uptown area should plan to use S. Broad St. and S. Claiborne Ave. for next several months. The City will soon re-route traffic and begin reconstructing the roadway on S. Galvez St. between Toledano St. and Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. as part of a $5.4M reconstruction project.
Funded with a Federal Community Development Block Grant, the S. Galvez St. Infrastructure Improvement Project was designed in accordance with the City of New Orleans’ Complete Streets policy. The project will enhance the public area and trigger subsequent recovery and investment in surrounding neighborhoods.
- The scope of work includes the following:
- Fully reconstructing the roadway;
- Replaceing the existing sewer, water and drainage lines;
- Installing pervious concrete parking lanes to reduce the amount of water that requires pumping and processing by the City’s storm water drainage system;
- Narrowing the width of the existing roadway from 35 ft. to 26 ft, and;
- Reconfiguring the roadway from two travel lanes and one parking lane, to one travel lane, one dedicated bicycle lane and one parking lane.
Construction will last about nine months. View a copy of the pre-construction community meeting presentation here.
