The City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works, in conjunction with the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans, is now 20 percent finished with the construction of a road and infrastructure improvement project on Cherokee Street between Benjamin and Pearl streets. The project was designed by Professional Engineering Consultants Corporation and is being built by Fleming Construction Company, LLC.
Construction started the first week of June and is scheduled to last through the end of the year.
Crews have completed approximately 90 percent of the installation of new underground drainage lines on the downtown side of the project limits. Once the drainage work is completed, crews will begin installing the new water line on the opposite side of the street. The project team is also exploring the feasibility of adding in a sewer line repair on Cherokee Street between Benjamin and Hurst streets.
The project scope of work includes:
- Replacing existing water lines and installing new sub-drainage lines;
- Repairing damaged sewer lines;
- Repaving portions of the roadway in asphalt;
- Installing rain gardens and a pervious parking lane to reduce subsidence and detain stormwater;
- Replacing damaged sidewalks and driveway aprons; and
- Installing Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps at intersections.
The City hosted a pre-construction community meeting to discuss what residents can expect during construction. View a copy of the presentation here.
