The City of New Orleans today announced that beginning Monday, Aug. 16, 2021 beginning at 7 a.m., weather permitting, Department of Public Works contractor Wallace C. Drennan Construction Company will temporarily close the South Claiborne Avenue at the Short Street intersection between the 7900 and 8000 blocks of South Claiborne Avenue.
The eastbound lane adjacent to the parking lane will be closed for approximately two weeks to perform sewer line, drainage line and waterline replacement operations as part of the Marlyville-Fontainebleau Group C infrastructure improvement project. Residents in this area are being notified of the closure via a neighborhood canvass this week.
Public safety is our priority; residents and commuters are reminded to use caution when driving, bicycling and walking near the construction site. Lane closure signs will be in place throughout construction; this closure is scheduled to reopen Monday, Aug. 30 at 5:30 p.m., weather permitting.
During this time, street parking and/or driveway access will be impacted. Residents and visitors must adhere to any “No Parking” signs on the streets to avoid being ticketed and towed.
The $10.5M Marlyville-Fontainebleau Group C infrastructure improvement project calls for removing and replacing existing water and drainage lines, repairing the sewer line, repaving the roadway in asphalt, replacing damaged sidewalks and driveway aprons and installing Americans with Disabilities Act- compliant curb ramps at intersections. All work on this project is anticipated to be complete in winter 2022.
Since May 2018, DPW has completed 98 projects with an estimated value of $271M. Today, 69 projects are under construction with an estimated value of more than $600M.
