Bioswale adjustments, winter planting and security fencing are a few of the construction projects that Fleming Construction and Twin Shores are working on to complete the flood protection system in historic Pontchartrain Park neighborhood.
Crews are finishing plans to install security fencing around “green” stormwater lots near the neighborhood schools. They are also planting vegetation that thrives in the winter months in order to complete the dry retention areas that are capable of holding thousands of gallons of water that would otherwise cause flooding. The plant roots will help absorb excess water before it gets filtered into the city’s drainage system.
This Hazard Mitigation Grant Program project will help protect the historic neighborhood during a catastrophic storm. The entire project is scheduled to be finished this wuter and is currently more than 90 percent complete.
The $15M Pontilly Neighborhood Stormwater Network extends from Stephen Girard Avenue to Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO). A pre-construction community meeting was held in February 2019 at Mary D. Coghill Elementary School. View the pre-construction public meeting presentation here.
