The $1.6M Old Spanish Trail (Nighthart St.- Sherwood Dr.) roadway improvement project that started in January is making progress. The contractor for the Hatch Mott MacDonald-designed project is Beverly Construction Co., LLC, and work is expected to be completed in early 2022, weather permitting. The scope of work for the project may include: repaving the roadway from curb-to-curb; repairing damaged sidewalks and driveway aprons; installing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant curb ramps at intersections; and repalcing/repairing damaged underground water, sewer, and/or drainage lines. The Wright Road (Chef Menteur Boulevard — Dwyer Road) infrastructure improvement project contines to progress as well. The scope of work for the $6.2M project may include: replacing/repairing damaged underground water, sewer and/or drainage lines; repairing damaged curbs and gutters; patching the roadway with asphalt; replacing damaged sidewalks and driveway aprons; and installing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant curb ramps at intersections. The city-funded project, which is scheduled to be complete in spring 2022, weather permitting, is a collaborative effort between the City of New Orleans and the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans. The $2M city-funded 2020 French Quarter Sidewalk Improvement Plan is now well under way. Crews from Hard Rock Construction Co. LLC, continue installing new sidewalks along the 400 – 1000 blocks of Barracks Street. Work began started in the 400 block of Barracks in late September and progressed northward toward North Rampart Street. A final walk through of these blocks is scheduled with the contractor in early March. Crews started installing new sidewalks in the 1000 block of Governor Nicholls at North Rampart in late November and they are progressing southward toward the 400 block. This Governor Nichols segment is currently 63 percent complete. Crews have also started working on Ursulines Street between Decatur and North Rampart streets. The contractor is currently 19 percent complete on this segment and working on the down river side of the roadway. Travel lanes will temporarily be narrowed and the parking lane will be closed in blocks where crews are working. All segments of the French Quarter Sidewalk Improvement Plan are expected to be completed in summer 2021.
Construction contractor Barriere completed work on two of three improvement projects in the Marigny neighborhood in preparation for Moving New Orleans Bike Marigny / French Quarter Transportation Network. Crews wrapped up work on Elysian Fields Avenue from North Peters Street to St. Claude Avenue and on Franklin Avenue from North Peters Street to St. Claude Avenue. Paving on Elysian Fields Avenue has been The work is part of a $1.8M city-funded roadway improvement project.
Crews are also putting the finishing touches on the $642K Lakeview Pervious Alleyway completed and the roadway was re-striped to reduce it to two travel lanes and to add a bike lane. Paving resumed this month on Royal Street between Elysian Fields and Esplanade and is expected to be complete next month, weather permitting.
Restoration Pilot Program that began last summer. The city-funded pilot program, which was created to help address flooding issues in Lakeview alleys, includes alleys behind the 6200 block of Marshall Foch (between Harrison Avenue and French Street) and the 6300 block of Argonne Boulevard (between Harrison and Bragg Street). The project includes installing pervious pavement to help re-direct stormwater and alleviate flooding. It is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2021. The Department of Public Works is working to determine the success of the pilot and which Lakeview alley(s) might be considered for this type of treatment when funding becomes available.
Crews from Barriere construction continue to work on the permeable paving in the parking lanes along Notre Dame Street between Magazine Street and Convention Center Boulevard. The $800K city-funded project also includes installing three feet of stormwater storage and a perforated pipe installed underneath the pavement. The surface of the street is being repaved from curb to curb and new sidewalks are being installed. Construction completion has been pushed back to the first quarter of 2021 due to some additional work on sidewalks.
