Command Construction crews are paving St. Peter Street as part of the Hagan-Lafitte Project. Workers have completed massive drainage tie-ins beneath the street that will help remove excess flood water, channel it to huge storage tanks before eventually draining into the St. Louis Canal and the city's existing water disposal system. These connections will eventually cross Lafitte Greenway at key points (North White, North Gayoso, North Lopez, and North Rendon) during the installation. All pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be detoured around the Greenway’s path onto a new surface while construction continues. The schedule for the above detours will be communicated in advance.
The $7.1M Hagan-Lafitte project is a "gray-green" infrastructure project that will feature upsized drainage, urban bioswales and a huge water storage facility located underneath Easton Park.
The goals for the project, which is scheduled to be complete by Summer 2020 weather permitting, include:
- Increasing drainage to reduce flooding;
- Utilizing green infrastructure to slow, retain, and absorb storm water;
- Beautifying with green areas;
- Replenishing groundwater; and
- Storing rainwater underground.
