The Department of Public Works is currently piloting use of metal screens and filters to help reduce the likelihood that leaves, grass clippings and other undesirable debris can enter catch basins and the City’s storm drain system. Earlier this month, DPW worked with a vendor to install custom made BioClean screens on two catch basins in the French Quarter.
Screens such as the BioClean can help reduce the frequency vacuum trucks are needed to clear clogged catch basins and reduce the likelihood of roadway flooding during storm events.
Eighty five percent of the City’s clogged catch basins are full of leaves, grass clippings and yard waste that should be swept and disposed of in garbage cans. Residents can help improve the quality of life in their neighborhood by properly disposing of yard waste.
