Construction of the S. Galvez Street Reconstruction Project in Central City is well underway. Exploratory work at the intersection of S. Galvez Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. is complete. The temporary lane reduction on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard will return to its normal operations before the summer.
Concrete placement on S. Galvez Street between Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and First Street is scheduled for the second week of May, weather permitting. Crews are currently preparing the roadbed for placement of the pervious concrete parking lane later this month. The majority of construction work will be completed on the lake side of S. Galvez Street before crews begin work on the river side of the project.
The S. Galvez Street Infrastructure Improvement Project, which will be wrapped up by the end of this year, will enhance the public area and trigger subsequent recovery and investment in surrounding neighborhoods. The project was designed in accordance with the City of New Orleans’ Complete Streets policy.
The scope of work for this project includes full reconstruction of the roadway, including:
- Replacing the existing sewer, water and drainage lines;
- Widening the neutral ground;
- Narrowing the roadway from 35 ft. to 26 ft.; and
- Reconfiguring the roadway from two travel lanes and one parking lane to one travel lane, one dedicated bicycle lane and one parking lane.
