The Wright Road (Chef Menteur Boulevard — Dwyer Road) infrastructure improvement project began this month, and the scope of work for the $6.2M project may include: replacing/repairing damaged underground water, sewer and/or drainage lines; repairing damaged curbs and gutters; patching the roadway with asphalt; replacing damaged sidewalks and driveway aprons; and installing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant curb ramps at intersections. The city-funded project, which is scheduled to be complete in spring 2022, weather permitting, is a collaborative effort between the City of New Orleans and the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans. A public meeting about the project was held via Webex on Monday, November 9, 2020. You can access the presentation here.
Crews from Hard Rock Construction Co. LLC, are wrapping up installation of new sidewalks along the 400-1000 blocks of Barracks Street. Sidewalk work is complete on the Esplanade side of Barracks Street, and crews began working on the Canal Boulevard side of Barracks earlier this month. The work is part of the $2M city-funded 2020 French Quarter Sidewalk Improvement Plan. Work started in the 400 block of Barracks in late September and progressed northward toward North Rampart Street. It is expected to be complete by early December.
Construction contractor Barriere continued work on three projects in the Marigny neighborhood. The $1.8M city-funded roadway improvement projects are part of Moving New Orleans Bikes’ effort to improve roadways and safety for bike riders. Roadway improvements are being made on Elysian Fields – from North Peters to St. Claude; on Franklin Avenue – from North Peters to St. Claude Patch; and on Royal Street – from Elysian Fields to Esplanade. In November, paving of the Elysian Fields bike lane was completed and the roadway is being re-striped to reduce the roadway to two travel lanes.
Work is wrapping up on the St. Bernard and North Claiborne Pervious Parking Lanes Project. The $547K city-funded infrastructure improvement project near the iconic Circle Food Store includes installation of new pervious pavement parking lanes that will allow water to move throughout the pavement to help with storm water management. All pervious pavement has been poured, and asphalt touch-ups on St. Bernard are almost complete. The project will undergo an infiltration test before it is deemed complete. It is slated to be finished by the end of the year, weather permitting.
Crews are also putting the finishing touches on the $642K Lakeview Pervious Alleyway Restoration Pilot Program that began this summer. The city-funded pilot program, which was created to help address flooding issues in Lakeview alleys, includes alleys behind the 6200 block of Marshall Foch (between Harrison Avenue and French Street) and the 6300 block of Argonne Boulevard (between Harrison and Bragg Street). The project includes installing pervious pavement to help re-direct stormwater and alleviate flooding. It is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
On the West Bank, the $400K city-funded Bocage Maintenance Improvements project has completed the majority of the roadway work on Rue Delphine, Rue Densie, Rue Mignon, and Rue Collette. Crews completed pouring new concrete roadway on Carlisle Street in November, and Hard Rock Construction Co. crews began the installation of new sidewalks on Rue Andree. The project is scheduled to be complete in December 2020, weather permitting.
Crews from Barriere construction are finishing their work installing permeable paving in the parking lanes along Notre Dame Street between Magazine Street and Convention Center Boulevard. The $800K city-funded project also includes installing three feet of stormwater storage and a perforated pipe installed underneath the pavement. The surface of the street is being repaved from curb to curb and new sidewalks are being installed. Construction is scheduled to be complete later this year, weather permitting.
