Command Construction Industries, LLC has completed construction on the lake side of S. Galvez Street between Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Toledano Street and re-opened the roadway to local traffic.
Traffic on the river side of S. Galvez Street between Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Toledano Street is being detoured to S. Claiborne Avenue and S. Broad Street for the duration of construction, which is now scheduled to last through the end of the year. Construction crews have completed installation of the majority of the drainage lines and are currently installing and testing new water lines on the river side lane. Prior to connecting in a new water line to the system, contractors are required to perform pressure and chlorination tests to be certain the new pipe meets the Sewerage and Water Board’s standards. This project includes repairing damaged portions of the sewer pipes. Utility work is now scheduled to last through November.
The S. Galvez Street Infrastructure Improvement Project will enhance the public area and trigger subsequent recovery and investment in surrounding neighborhoods. The project was designed in accordance with the City of New Orleans’ Complete Streets policy.
The scope of work for this project includes full reconstruction of the roadway:
- Replacing the existing sewer, water and drainage lines;
- Widening the neutral ground;
- Narrowing the roadway from 35 feet to 26 feet; and
- Reconfiguring the roadway from two travel lanes and one parking lane to one travel lane, one dedicated bicycle lane and one parking lane.
The S. Galvez Street Infrastructure Improvement Project is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
