The City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works, in conjunction with the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans, has now completed 50 percent of theroad and infrastructure improvement project on Cherokee Street, between Benjamin and Pearl streets. The project was designed by Professional Engineering Consultants Corporation and is being built by Fleming Construction Company, LLC. Construction started the first week of June and is scheduled to last through the end of the year.
One construction crew is currently installing the lateral pipes that connect the main drain line to catch basins along the length of project, while a second crew installs a new water line on the opposite side of the street.
Additionally, the project team observed a conflict with several trees within the project limits. After a consultation with the City’s Department of Parks and Parkways, the health of the trees was determined to be poor, and the risk of future utility damage was determined to be likely. As a result, the City will remove and replace several of the crepe myrtles on Cherokee Street.
The project scope of work includes:
- Replacing existing water lines and installing new sub-drainage lines;
- Repairing damaged sewer lines;
- Repaving portions of the roadway in asphalt;
- Installing rain gardens and a pervious parking lane to reduce subsidence and detain storm water;
- Replacing damaged sidewalks and driveway aprons; and
- Installing Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps at intersections.
The City hosted a pre-construction community meeting to discuss what residents can expect during construction. View a copy of the presentation here.
