Mayor LaToya Cantrell today joined other local, state and federal officials as well as neighborhood leaders in celebrating the completion of the $15.5 million Pontilly Neighborhood Stormwater Network.

The Cantrell Administration is working with the existing pump capacity by building additional storage around the city utilizing parks, vacant land, and innovative streetscaping to create temporary storage to hold rain during those big events while the pumps catch up.  This approach, combined with efficiencies to the pump system to get the most capacity of the pumps and reliably provide power to the system, as well as our ongoing effort to keep litter out of the drainage system, is our immediate priority to get the most out of the existing system.  

Fleming Construction Co., LLC, CDM Smith, and the Department of Public Works completed a sitewide walkthrough to ensure that all roads, bioswales, stormwater lots, curbs, green alleyways and sidewalks are complete before finishing the massive $15M stormwater management system.

Final paving is under way at the Hagan Lafitte Drainage project with Command Construction currently working to finish sidewalks, curbs and rain gardens sitewide.

The Gentilly Resilience District (GRD) is a combination of resilience programs and projects in the targeted area of Gentilly, designed to reduce flood risk, slow land subsidence, improve energy reliability and spur neighborhood revitalization. The city’s first Resilience District uses various approaches to water and land management that have been successfully piloted throughout New Orleans and, when implemented together, are intended to create even greater neighborhood benefits—such as improved health, economic opportunity, environmental education, and recreation.
