IT’S (WATER) HAMMER TIME

There are two bold new additions rising from the landscape in Uptown New Orleans. The Sewerage & Water Board is constructing two 200-foot-tall water towers at the Carrollton Water Plant as part of the $80 million Water Hammer Hazard Mitigation Program. Funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP), the project is designed to prevent major damage to the city’s water piping infrastructure from water hammer effects.

Earlier this month, residents at West End Boulevard and Jewel Street were awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of water slamming into a house from a main break.  Luckily for the occupants, a huge tree protected their property from receiving anything more than superficial damage.
