Construction on the $4.5M Canal Boulevard Reconstruction (Robert E. Lee Boulevard – Amethyst Street) project was completed in March, and contractor Palmisano Conctruction wrapped up the final clean-up and punch list items in May. The scope of work for the project, which started in summer 2019, included replacing the drain, sewer and water lines, rebuilding the street entirely, repairing sidewalks and curbs, installing a dedicated bike lane, and installing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) complaint curb ramps on the north- and southbound lanes.

The scope of work for the project, which started in summer 2019 included replacing the drain, sewer and water lines, rebuilding the street entirely, repairing sidewalks and curbs, installing a dedicated bike lane, and installing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-complaint curb ramps on the north- and southbound lanes. 

The majority of the new sidewalks have been poured from Robert E. Lee Boulevard to Jewel Street and crews are wrapping up the last few sewer house connections. All curbs and gutters have been installed and the binder (layer between the foundation and wearing course) and wearing (upper layer of the roadway) courses of asphalt are being placed. Roadway striping is scheduled for completion in early March. The project remains on schedule to be complete in spring 2021, weather permitting.

All water main installations have been completed between Robert E. Lee Boulevard and Amethyst Street, and crews began prepping the roadway for the binder layer of asphalt installation this month. Crews also started creating forms for new concrete curbs, gutters, sidewalks and driveway aprons along the southbound lanes. The project is on schedule to be complete in March 2021, weather permitting.

All water main installations have been completed between Ring and Amethyst streets and all water line tie-ins have been completed at Jewel and Amethyst, so all houses from Ring to Amethyst are now connected to the new water main. In December, Palmisano construction crews began working on sewer line house connections at Amethyst Street and are working their way southbound. Catch basin tops are beginning to be formed between Ring Street and Jewel Street, and as catch basins are installed, crews will begin installing yard drains to the nearest catch basin.
