Construction of the S. Galvez Street Reconstruction Project in Central City resumed the week of April 16 Crews had temporarily de-mobilized from the site awaiting approval to increase the project’s scope of work. The scope additions will improve the roadway’s ability to evacuate storm water.
Crews are performing exploratory work on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard at the intersection of S. Galvez Street. This work requires a travel lane reduction, and re-routing traffic in both directions to the traditionally lakebound lane of Martin Luther King. Jr. Boulevard. Please be mindful of directional signage, barricades and cones on site. Duration of the lane reduction and re-routing is unknown at this time.
The S. Galvez Street Infrastructure Improvement Project will enhance the public area and trigger subsequent recovery and investment in surrounding neighborhoods. The project was designed in accordance with the City of New Orleans’ Complete Streets policy.
The scope of work for this project includes full reconstruction of the roadway, including:
- Replacing the existing sewer, water and drainage lines;
- Widening the neutral ground;
- Narrowing the roadway from 35 ft. to 26 ft.; and
- Reconfiguring the roadway from two travel lanes and one parking lane to one travel lane, one dedicated bicycle lane and one parking lane.
