Command Construction Industries, LLC has completed placing the pervious concrete on the river side of S. Galvez Street between Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Toledano Street. The capacity of both the river and lake side pervious parking lanes is equivalent to 1500 bath tubs worth of water. This project will detain storm water to prevent the City’s pumping system from being overwhelmed during a rain event.
The river side traffic is detoured to S. Claiborne Avenue and S. Broad Street for the duration of construction. Poor weather has delayed this project; construction is scheduled to last until the spring of 2019.
Construction crews have one final lane reduction planned on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. The lane reduction will allow crews to place permanent pavement following tie in of the new utilities. Follow RoadworkNOLA on social media to receive a copy of the traffic advisory when this work is scheduled.
The S. Galvez Street Infrastructure Improvement Project will enhance the public area and trigger subsequent recovery and investment in surrounding neighborhoods. The project was designed in accordance with the City of New Orleans’ Complete Streets policy.
Landscaping is scheduled to be planted at the end of the project.
The scope of work for this project includes full reconstruction of the roadway, including:
- Replacing the existing sewer, water and drainage lines;
- Widening the neutral ground;
- Narrowing the roadway from 35 ft. to 26 ft.; and
- Reconfiguring the roadway from two travel lanes and one parking lane to one travel lane, one dedicated bicycle lane and one parking lane.
