Command Construction Industries, LLC crews have completed installing the new water and sewer lines on the traditionally river bound travel lane of S. Galvez St. in Central City. Approximately 60 percent of the new drainage lines have also been installed between Toledano St. and Fourth St., making the $5.4M reconstruction project approximately 25 percent complete. Crews will begin installing new roadway base course this week and a pavement placement will occur before the end of the month.
Construction crews have also installed about 25 percent of the electrical conduit needed for the new street lights. This project calls for moving the existing streetlights from the neutral ground to the sidewalks on either side of the project limits.
The project runs from Toledano St. to Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Safety fencing and signage is in place to ensure residents and commuters are safe while near the construction site.
Construction crews have completed installing the new water mains between Toledano St. and Third St. and are in the process of installing the new water main from Third St. to Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. These new lines will soon be ready to connect to the intersecting side streets. Additional exploratory work at the intersection of Jackson Ave. may also be necessary and would require travel lane reductions.
Funded with a Federal Community Development Block Grants, the Infrastructure Improvement Project will enhance the public area and trigger subsequent recovery and investment in surrounding neighborhoods. The S. Galvez St. Infrastructure Improvement Project was designed in accordance with the City of New Orleans’ Complete Streets policy.
The scope of work for this project includes full reconstruction of the roadway including:
- Replacing the existing sewer, water and drainage lines;
- Widening the neutral ground;
- Narrowing the roadway from 35 ft. to 26 ft.; and
- Reconfiguring the roadway from two travel lanes and a parking lane, to one travel lane, one dedicated bicycle lane, and a parking lane.
