The City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works, in conjunction with the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans, is now 72 percent complete constructing a road and infrastructure improvement project on Cherokee Street between Benjamin and Pearl streets. The project was designed by Professional Engineering Consultants Corporation and is being built by Fleming Construction Company, LLC.
Construction crews recently encountered unforeseen site conditions that will require scope changes. Additionally, the City is exploring the feasibility of adding additional sidewalk work into the project. These two issues have slightly delayed the project and it is now scheduled to last until early 2019.
The project scope of work includes:
- Replacing existing water lines and installing new sub-drainage lines;
- Repairing damaged sewer lines;
- Repaving portions of the roadway in asphalt;
- Installing rain gardens and a pervious parking lane to reduce subsidence and detain stormwater;
- Replacing damaged sidewalks and driveway aprons; and
- Installing Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps at intersections.
The City hosted a pre-construction community meeting to discuss what residents can expect during construction. View a copy of the pre-construction community meeting presentation here.
