Roubion Roads and Streets, LLC has resumed construction of the Safe Routes to School project near the International School of Louisiana. The project was delayed after construction crews excavated an unmarked drainage canal on Camp St.
The project will improve children’s access to school campuses and encourage healthy lifestyle habits such as walking and biking. A cost share project between the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and the City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works, the remaining scope of work includes:
- Restoring the underground box canal using construction methods prescribed by the State Historic Preservation Office;
- Replacing the damaged sidewalk above the canal;
- Installing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant curb ramps at the intersection of Camp and Race Streets; and
- Installing a new 4 ft., ADA-compliant sidewalk on Euterpe Street which requires removing four unhealthy, existing ash trees and replacing them with four healthy Chinese pistache trees.
