Construction on the $3M, federally-funded rehabilitation project on Marconi Drive and Orleans Avenue is nearing completion and will wrap up this month.
Part of the project includes implementing a lane reconfiguration that will benefit all roadway users: people walking, driving, bicycling and taking transit.
- Based on the traffic volumes, the roadway will be redesigned to reduce speeding and shorten crossing distances.
- These changes will benefit people driving by reducing the likelihood and severity of crashes.
- The new configuration will create a safer and more comfortable experience walking along and across Marconi, from cars, from transit stops, from homes, and /or from City Park and Delgado.
- Marconi Drive will provide multiple transportation options to neighborhood residents, as well as people from across the City who access Delgado and City Park.

Department of Public Works (DPW) and Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) continue to work closely with Delgado Community College and City Park (Tad Gormley Stadium).
In general the contractor is working Monday-Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Throughout construction, one travel lane will remain open in each direction at all times; however, there is no parking on both sides of Marconi Drive/Orleans Avenue. Signage and parking instructions are visibly posted throughout the duration of the project.
The scope of work includes:
- Repairing some damaged sidewalks and driveway aprons;
- Repaving the roadway with asphalt;
- Installing Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps at intersections and new high-visibility crosswalks;
- Installing a new two-way cycle track on Marconi Drive alongside City Park;
- Installing a new river bound protected bike lane on Orleans Avenue alongside Delgado Community College; and
- Constructing a new ADA-compliant bus loading islands on Marconi Drive and Orleans Avenue.
