The City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works, in conjunction with the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans, has now completed 60 percent of the road and infrastructure improvement project on Cherokee Street between Benjamin and Pearl streets. The project was designed by Professional Engineering Consultants Corporation and is being built by Fleming Construction Company, LLC. Construction started the first week of June and is scheduled to last through the end of the year.
Construction crews are currently forming up the new curb and roadways. A second crew is installing a new water line on the uptown side of the street. This month, crews will begin forming the locations of the future rain gardens; plantings are one of the last tasks the construction crew will perform.
The project scope of work includes:
- Replacing existing water lines and installing new sub-drainage lines;
- Repairing damaged sewer lines;
- Repaving portions of the roadway in asphalt;
- Installing rain gardens and a pervious parking lane to reduce subsidence and detain stormwater;
- Replacing damaged sidewalks and driveway aprons; and
- Installing Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps at intersections.
The City hosted a pre-construction community meeting to discuss what residents can expect during construction. View a copy of the pre-construction community meeting presentation here.
